Live theatre is the collaborative result of many separate artists and
craftsmen. Each individual makes his or her own creative contribution,
but the true magic of the theatre arts is how each contribution --
including the audience's -- works together to form something larger and
more enduring than the total of its parts. The modern theatre
represents a tradition that has thrived for as long as individuals have
dared to stand before others to entertain, persuade or enlighten. It
is a part of everyone's daily life and the need for Thespians to
continue on the tradition is unabated. The beginning theatre person can
expect to have to work hard to enter the industry. It may take several
years of struggle and intermittent work before an individual can support
himself completely from his art or craft. But theatre work offers its
compensations. While some careers may be seen as a choice of vocation,
a career in the theatre could be described as a choice of lifestyle.
For those who desire an unstructured, challenging occupation, one full
of surprises and unpredictable turns, there is a career in theatre for
every personality and taste.
Program Specialty Descriptions
Acting
Actors represent or perform actions and emotions typically as a part of a live theatrical narrative.
Camera
Camera is the art of capturing moving action or still life with use and manipulation of natural and artificial light.
Costume Design
The costume designer is sensitive to the development and emotional dynamics of a dramatic character. They also work with integrating elements of the set design into the actors' costumes.
Design
Design is the broad category that involves the creative process of developing ideas into tactile forms. Designers may be in charge of sets, sound, costumes or lighting.
Directing
Directors are in charge of facilitating the construction and performance of a dramatic, musical or operatic productions.
Drama
A literary narrative usually designed for theatrical performances that deal with the human condition through characters, conflicts, emotions and settings.
Dramatic Criticism
Dramatic criticism is the analysis of a dramatic performance or entire dramatic production based on diverse criteria.
Dramaturgy
Dramaturgy, derived from the greek word dramatourgia is the discipline or art of dramatic composition and presentation.
Film
Film is the art of capturing a narrative or story onto a compact and replayable medium.
Lighting Design
The lighting designer is in charge of delivering or enhancing intended dramatic effects within theatrical scenes through the manipulation of controlled light.
Mime
A mime is a performer who merely 'suggests' narrative, action and speech through body movements and gestures.
Period Acting
Period acting is the method of acting that adopts human characterizations from specific time periods.
Playwriting
Playwriting is the process of writing narratives intended to be performed as theatrical plays.
Scene Design
The scene designer is in charge of delivering the dramatic specific to individual scenes within a theatrical production.
Sound Design
Sound design involves the writing, production and placement of sound and music in a theatrical presentation.
Special Effects Makeup
Special effects makeup is employed to accentuate the drama presented by an actor and to support intended visual illusions.
Stage Management
The stage manager is the director's backstage executor during rehearsal and performance, directly in charge of facilitating the running and pace of the show.
Stage Movement
Stage movement involves the real-time and between scene manipulation of the acting stage in support of a theatrical performance.
Stagecraft
Stagecraft is the general field involved in the writing and staging of theatrical plays.
Theater Management
The theater manager is in charge of running a theater group and theater facilities.
Theatre
The category of the performing arts pertaining to the dramatic, real-time presentation of a literary narrative. Acting, sound production, direction, lighting design, stage production and costumes are just a few of the key elements of this presentation.
